Shyam Lila is here!

CLICK HERE TO OWN SHYAM LILA!! →

Dear Bhaktas!

April 15, 2014

In the wee hours of the morning, the earth was graced with the Red Moon Lunar Eclipse, a time that signals incredible opportunity for radical shifts in the universe!  Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, the chanting revolutionary, who was a combined  incarnation of  Radha and Govinda, was also born on a full moon lunar eclipse.  At that time, the residents of  West Bengal,India,  fearing what they believed to be a sign of inauspiciousness,  bathed in the Ganges and chanted the Holy Name of the Beloved all night, their voices choked with emotion.  By their chanting they made the night the most auspicious night, the night gave an opening for the descent of the Kirtan Avatar. By grace, Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was born into all auspiciousness, on what could have been called a night of darkness.

At Mantralogy, we  are honored to say that we are  welcoming Adam Bauer’s long awaited Shyam Lila,  on the morning of the Red Moon.  It is an offering and prayer to the Beloved, both Divine masculine and to the Goddess,  Shakti.  Throughout Adam’s beautifully woven mantras,  and Gaura Vani’s stellar production,  is the voice of Shyam, carrying his bhakti teachings, which bring remembrance of who we really are.  The Red Moon Lunar Eclipse with be at the front of what we hope is the continued turning of all Jivas to Bhakti Yoga, and to the Names of the Beloved again and again.

Like the residents of Navadwip,  on that full moon lunar eclipse 500 years ago, I invite all of you to come out en masse, and support this Kirtan revolutionary, our dear Adam Bauer, Purushotamma das.

( Which is also my birthday!! ) This album is a lush landscape of groovy soulful chants, that are smooth and velvety in their texture, yet written so that if you are a responder in the kirtan, the melody is easily learned, and later hummed all day.

Also this spring we have the arrival of Ocean of Grace, by Prema Hara. Due for release on May 13, the auspicious Appearance day of Lord Narasimha, the half-man half-lion incarnation of Krishna who descends for the purpose of protecting his devotees. It is often said that in the Kali Yoga one is safest in the middle of a kirtan. At Mantralogy we must agree!

Prema Hara is in the south of Germany right now, where they just set sail on the Europe leg of their four month international tour.  For the next five weeks they will be traveling through Germany, Switzerland, The Netherlands, Belgium and Austria for what is now Prema Hara’s fifth Europe tour in the last three years.  Then in mid-April they dive right into their US CD release tour – a full schedule covering eighteen states in two and a half months, including appearances at Shakti Fest in Joshua Tree – their official CD release celebration! – and at Bhakti Fest Midwest.

Shyamdas Memorial and new things ahead

Dear Friends,

This weekend,  January 19,  marked the one year anniversary of the passing of Shyamdas into the eternal Lila abode of Sri Krishna. For all of us in the earthly Bhakti community it was the greatest loss, one many of us had a hard time imagining surviving. I feel that Shyam would have been so happy to know that we all spent the weekend in Satsang, his favorite place to be. We chanted, we told funny stories, and shared prasad. This was the beginning, middle and end of his teaching. Gather with “bhavish people” and share satsang.

We are eternally grateful for his association, for his beautiful teachings and his Bhajan, which live now in our hearts, in his books and in recordings of his voice, and in every satsang we share. We pray to carry his intentions as long as we live and to join him in Goloka Vrindavan someday.  Shyamdas-ji ki jaya!

Mantralogy has some wonderful news.  We welcome Adam Bauer, aka Purushottama das to the family. We will be releasing his album, Shyam Lila, which was recorded and produced by Mantralogy co-founder Gaura Vani, in the spring.

Also up and coming: a new album by Prema Hara, an offering by Yoga teacher extraordinaire Raghunath das, Inner Goddess, an audio book recorded by Shyam for Mantralogy last fall, and looking forward, a new album by Jahnavi Harrison and SRI Kirtan! Plus new t shirt designs are in the works.  GOOD THINGS AHEAD!

Happy 2014 to all and much love,
Keli

Mantralogy News!

As we head into winter, the warmth of Kirtan gatherings becomes ever more important to us as humans. Luckily we are in an era where we are often forced to choose between two amazing events in the same city on the same night.

Here are some note worthy December events:

Radhanath Swami is back in the states and will be at Flow Yoga with Gaura Vani for a night of teaching and Kirtan Dec 2nd.  Please check Gaura Vani’s website or facebook page for details.

Also: The All Night Kirtan at New York Ashtanga aka The Broome St Temple, is shaping up for Decmber 14-15. Come warm your hearts with Devadas, who is organizing the event. Get ready for Hanuman Chalisa, two sets by musicians from Brooklyn Raga Massive, Ehren Hansen and Eric Fraser, and more. Nina Rao and SRI Kirtan will be there and the list is growing.

Our new website is just about ready to rock, so stay tuned in the next week for the big turnover. Our new site should be easier to use, with more photos of our bands, more comprehensive information about events, and a simpler format which will hopefully be more enjoyable to browse.

Thank you to the Hanumen for getting together to play more gigs this fall. It’s way to long to wait till summer. The stuff that happens when you enter the energy field of the Hanumen is beyond the beyond. They have a magic that is best known through direct experience. But in short I’ll say that they are able to bring their listeners into the divine realm of sound vibration and open hearts. They are the gardeners of an eclectic new eden of non-sectarian mantra music and sound vibration. They are all virtuosos, and practitioners who go beyond practice. Please know them in this life time. Their work is truly revolutionary.

OTHER NEWS:

Prema Hara is just about to finish their new album, dropping down onto to earth for Shakti Fest. Jahnavi Harrison’s record is in the works and will come out early next summer. Both promise to be beautiful offerings. SRI Kirtan has been laying down tracks in Woodstock and there will be more.

Thank you to Bernie Walters of Ahimsa Music Festival fame. What a successful day of Yoga, Meditation and Mantra Music! The shining star of that day was Prajna Vieirra who both taught yoga, and literally tore the roof off the house with her powerhouse voice and ridiculous kirtan chops. Her Shiva Bhajan was unforgettable and epic. If you were there, you witnessed it. If you weren’t there that day, try to get somewhere that you could be in her presence. The Shakti moves through her in a way rarely witnessed. Amazing…And don’t forget Ben Leinbach, Prajna’s musical partner, who is the musical genius behind so much of what we hear every day in yoga or when we receive body work, and many many kirtan recordings.

So please stay in touch- the Mantra Music Revolution is happening! so as the Hanumen always sing- Come And Dance With Me!  Oh yeah….AND follow Mantralogy on Instagram! Lots of fun photos of our tribe and new gear  for the winter.

with Prem,

BHAJAN BOAT SAILS AGAIN, FROM HUDSON, NY AUG 25th!!

When our dearest friend, mentor, teacher and Mantralogy artist, Shyam das, left this earthly plane in January, it seemed impossible to us to consider another Bhajan Boat. But then it seemed impossible not to. The Bhajan Boat was Shyam’s love and joy and we spent many magical afternoons with him, chanting the sacred names and enjoying our simple hometown, potluck prasad.  We sailed  in perfect warm and sunny weather and on some cold and stormy days as well. We even once sailed during a hurricane, which Shyam artfully dubbed the “HARI-cane.”

Shyam’s delight in being with other Bhaktas on the Hudson river, chanting the sacred names was so absolute, he was never deterred. His faith in the magic of the Bhajan Boat, and the glory of the experience was full, and all pervading. It filled him with over flowing joy and some seriously, ridiculously silly bhav.  Remembering this, we felt we had to keep it going. And we knew hat it would be tremendously pleasing to him, that we would all be joining together again on the boat, to chant the names of the Beloved.

PLEASE JOIN US! AUGUST 25, 2013!

Glowing Hanumen Review!

The Hanumen (self-titled). Available from hanumen.com and from mantralogy.com

CD Review by Steven J. Rosen (Satyaraja Dasa)*

“To be forewarned is to be four-armed: the Hanumen will rock your world!” –the residents of Vaikuntha

When I first heard the Hanumen at the famous Menla Mountain Resort in Phoenicia, New York, I was taken by the fact that they sat in a circle, and concentrically around them sat the audience. Attendees were almost indistinguishable from the band, which, in my estimation, was intentional — the band wanted to create an atmosphere of one big family, of a sort of oneness in purpose that underlies the spiritual theme of their music.

The circular formation also reminded me of Dancing Sarah’s Circle, a biblical story drawn from the narrative of Sarah’s interaction with God. This circle represents a divine dance of love — even if, in the case of the Menla concert, it manifested from a seated position (though not seated for long!). Dancing Sarah’s Circle reminds us that our lives are interconnected, not only with God and other living beings, including people and animals, but with all of creation. For Vaishnavas, this brings to mind the ultimate dance of love, the Rasa-lila, where Krishna shows His affection for all living beings through the prototype of His most intimate devotees, the cowherd maidens of Braj (the gopis). The inverted words “rasa” and “sara” will not be lost on comparativists.

The Hanumen are also about this interconnectedness, as is clear from the band itself. Benjy Wertheimer, John de Kadt, Puru Sadkin, Jahnavi Harrison, and Gaura Vani—amongst their many guest musicians, including noteworthy Steve Gorn—bring numerous disciplines and vantage points to bear. Their diversiform religious practices, the range of age and gender, and their varied training as musicians represent the spirit of cooperation, of moving beyond superficial differences and sectarian boundaries. In the mood of the Hanumen, or rather as a precursor to them, Hanuman himself graces many Asian countries outside of India, including Burma, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, the Philippines, and China (and now in various parts of the western world as well)—showing that he too is interdenominational and favors diversity.

Who is the original Hanuman? He is the monkey-god devotee of Lord Rama, the exemplar of unmotivated and uninterrupted devotion. He shows by word and deed how bhakti (devotion) is a form of yoga, all-encompassing and a matter of strict discipline, even while being spontaneous and full of passion. Interestingly, the ancient Madhva tradition of Vaishnavism explains that Hanuman is the archetype of the perfect devotee, setting an example for human beings and beckoning us to make our love perfect. This is the closest, say the Madhvas, that limited living beings (jivas) can come to being truly divine. The Hanumen seek to take us in this direction.

Which brings us to the music itself.

The band breaks new ground. Steeped in the traditions of mantra meditation (particularly kirtan) and world music, they venture off into funk, country, spoken word, jamband, zydeco, reggae, jazz, blues, and rock. And that’s just in the first song!

The Hanumen take listeners on a stimulating rollercoaster ride, engaging mellow, folk-inflected melodies as much as high-energy and soulful outbursts of rhythmic glee. The musicianship is virtuosic, but that doesn’t detract from the sheer feeling and simple sensibilities of the songs. This is a rare feat — most virtuoso bands lose the point of the tunes and fall into self-indulgent artistic meandering. To be sure, there are intensely musical moments on this record. But what consistently brings these particular musicians back to the central theme of each song before too long, I am sure, is their devotion to the spiritual pursuit, their unwavering focus on the Divine.

De Kadt, excelling on his various percussion instruments and spoken-word Sufi poetry; Wertheimer, soaring away on his haunting esraj, adeptly pounding his tablas, and belting out his heartfelt vocals; Gorn, bringing listeners to transcendent realms with his clarinet or bansuri flute; Harrison, with her unmistakable voice and consummate violin artistry; Puru, who underscores everything with his funky bass lines (bringing Jaco to Braj)—and Gaura Vani, who ties it all together with his loving bhava, creative song-writing, singing, guitar, harmonium, musical demeanor, and endearing audience rapport—are dedicated to a common purpose. They tap into the energy of the Divine by harnessing His/Her intrinsic sound vibration.

Will anyone find fault with this almost perfect CD? Of course they will. Since it charts new ground, traditionalists might find it too experimental, too far afield for their inflexible tastes (though the Hare Krishna Maha-mantra and other well known kirtan tunes are amply represented throughout the disc). Conversely, New Age enthusiasts and youthful pop music fans might find the music too steeped in age-old mantras and orthodox traditions of India (though one would be hard-pressed to find a more hip or soulful version of “Wade in the Water”). Still, at the end of the day, if listeners give it half a chance, even the naysayer will find much to appreciate in the Hanumen.

There are some moments on this CD that initially seemed a bit schmaltzy to me—the tune, “I Love You” comes to mind. “Mother, I want you to know that I love you. There may have been things I have done to make you doubt. But don’t you doubt. Mother, I want you to know that I love you. I do.” The same is sung to father, children, darling, and finally to Jesus, Buddha, Allah, Rama, and Krishna. I listened carefully, and, to tell the truth, my reservations quickly melted away. My heart softened. I cried. So I want to add a final line, both to that song and to this review: “Hanumen, I want you to know that I love you. There may have been things I have done to make you doubt. But don’t you doubt. Hanumen, I want you to know that I love you. I do”
